High school prom committee just trying not to be racist this year

Kitchener, ON – While most committees spend the bulk of their budget on venues, decorations, and catering, this year’s committee at Henry Dow Secondary is putting 90% of its money on coming up with a non-racist theme.

“We know that people have been coming down hard on racism in school events, so we’ve taken upon ourselves not to use any theme that might offend people,” said committee chair, Sarah H. “Of course, this rules out almost every prom theme we’ve done in the past, as well as every theme we’ve found in a book or website.”

Reports confirm that rejected themes for this year’s prom include classics such as: Arabian Nights, Oriental Delight, The Antebellum South, and Enchantment Under the Apartheid.

“This is a new frontier in planning,” said co-chair, Sarah Q. “Although I have to admit it’s a bit frustrating. Can you believe some people are offended by the Chiefs and Squaws theme?”

At press time, the hopeful teens were wondering if they should invite people of colour to join the prom committee.
