OTTAWA – After announcing the “largest clean energy investment in North American history” this week, PM Mark Carney advised that the environmental benefits of the 70 billion dollar taxpayer investment will almost be enough to offset the carbon emissions of 2 days of the new crude pipeline he announced last month.
“Our new projects will create 14,000 megawatts of clean, renewable energy,” said Carney. “That’s enough power to light, heat and cool every home in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver, the last of which will only be partially underwater from climate change by the time these investments kick in.”
“It’s all part of our mission statement to take bold, decisive action in completely contradictory directions,” he added.
By producing more clean energy through Churchill Falls and other solar and wind projects, Canadians will not need to use as many fossil fuels or other environmentally damaging sources of power for electricity. This will have a long-term reduction in the country’s carbon emissions that environmental scientists call “significant,” “in any other country a total gamechanger” and “laughable when compared to the amount they will go up from the new pipeline”.
Surprisingly Canada’s oil and gas producers are very supportive of the new program, according to a spokesperson for Trans Mountain.
“Abundant, clean energy is vital for the country. Also it will really help lower our electricity costs when building the pipeline, so that’s pretty sweet.”
