TORONTO – Despite a well-received season 3 run, HBO’s hit series The White Lotus is facing backlash over failing to deliver on a central question that kept fans returning cliffhanger after cliffhanger: do rich people have problems too?
“It’s just so lazy and disappointing,” longtime Lotus fan Christine Mraz told reporters. “Like, from the very first flash-forward scene, the show’s been building all this tension up to the reveal of whether people who make way more money than most people have personal challenges – and in the end, it was like, they didn’t even touch on the topic.”
New York times critic James Ponowosniak commented, “It’s unfortunate to see this type of cheap storytelling, where the creators will dangle a scintillating mystery (like, is it possible to have a fight with your friends in an infinity pool?) and never bother to pay it off.”
Show creator Mike White acknowledged the criticism, but pointed to a compressed writing schedule as the culprit. “With only two and a half years between seasons, it’s simply not possible for the creators to answer questions like ‘do rich people know they’re going to die?’ and ‘do rich people die if they’re poisoned?'”
Asked whether she would keep watching a fourth season of The White Lotus, Mraz said 100% yes, absolutely.
