PETERBOROUGH – Upon being offered a loan for his tuition fee with government aid, a third year undergraduate student celebrated with a $3,000 alcohol-fueled party.
21 year-old Owen Blais, a geography student at Trent University, purchased several kegs and countless bottles of liquor from a local LCBO to celebrate with friends and friends-of-friends after learning his credit was extended.
“Students have it rough” Blais said with a mixed drink in hand. “The cost of school has taken its toll on all of us. I’m happy to know that I can afford school for another semester and now that I have the money, I can throw a party.”
Blais received a $8,000 loan from the Ontario government to pay for $4,500 annual tuition, $2,000 in books, $3,200 in rent and $1,600 in food. With enough left over, Blais states he will be able to take a Reading Week trip to Mexico.
“It’s just like that Twain guy said,” a more inebriated Blais slurred. “‘Don’t let math get in the way of your education.’”
