TORONTO – Thousands of Facebook users have been quarantined by the Public Health Agency of Canada after a significant outbreak of novel coronavirus-related bigotry on a CBC News comments thread.
At least 1,400 people on the comments section tested positive for being a racist while infecting others with misinformation about the 176 Canadians being transported from Wuhan, China, to Trenton, Ontario.
“We are working with the CDC and the meme community on contact tracing,” said Canada Chief Public Health Officer Theresa Tam. “This is one of the most significant dumbass outbreaks ever seen in this country’s history. Despite efforts at inoculation through education and media literacy, the herd-resistance to being a bigoted asshole remains low.”
The incubation rate of coronavirus-related hate can vary, but epidemiologists say those with pre-existing racist conditions are at a greater risk of spewing out discrimination against persons of Chinese descent.
Health officials have already duct taped heavy mittens onto the hands of thousands of social media users to prevent racist virus spread through typing and memeing.
In Toronto, the entire team at the Instagram account 6ixBuzztv has been put in isolation at Sunnybrook Hospital for targeting a Chinese restaurant, which temporarily relieved the headaches and nausea commonly associated with many of the account’s inane posts.
Meanwhile, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg says that his company will follow standard policy against racism by doing nothing about it.
