GUELPH, ON – A failed relationship was given another chance late last night when three emoticons were used symbolically during an instant messaging conversation.
Following a three hour on-line chat session between Tim Hortons coworkers Matthew Juliard, 26, and Samantha Spears, 22, three emoticons were used to rekindle their relationship. Spears used a cartoon girl, an addition sign, a cartoon boy, an equal sign, and a cartoon thumbs-up to convey the fact that they were officially back together.
The relationship was brought to a halt in November during a similar text-messaging conversation in which Spears made the decision to end the relationship, also
through the use of emoticons, because she felt that Juliard was not in tune with her needs. Spears then adamantly refused to continue contact with the heart-broken Juliard, and spent the last eight weeks screening her phone calls in order to avoid him.
However, after numerous emails, electronic roses, and e-greeting cards sent to her by her then ex-boyfriend, Spears finally agreed to humour Juliard by engaging in an online chat session.
Juliard presented a convincing case, and after three hours of text and emoticon deliberations, Spears ultimately agreed to begin seeing Juliard again. An overjoyed Juliard then hurriedly sent Spears a number of cartoon roses to express his appreciation for her.
“A cartoon thumbs-up has never made me so happy,” Juliard told reporters. “I was ready to go all out and send her all the cartoon roses and cartoon bottles of champagne that she wanted.”
The celebration was short lived.
Juliard pushed his luck by sending Spears a cartoon boy, an addition sign, a cartoon girl, another addition sign, a second cartoon girl (signifying his interest in a
threesome), an equal sign, and a cartoon thumbs-up followed by a question mark. Upon receiving this proposal, Spears immediately logged-off, and Juliard has not been able to reach her since.
