OTTAWA – Four days into a gruelling promotion, soft-rock radio station CKJP “The Buck” has yet to receive one caller in a contest for free tickets to an Ottawa Senators home game.
The “Mike and Liz Show” was offering a pair of 100-level seats to the eleventh caller in honour of former Sens captain Daniel Alfredsson last week. However, the only caller into the show was elderly woman asking for ‘Gerald.’
“Okay people, we are giving this out for all the Sens fans out there, or those who just need something to do on the evening of February 1st,” announced an exhausted host Mike Lake after the contest. “Call 613-555-4898…please call that number. We’ll sweeten the deal by paying you to be there.”
After the first 72 hours without a participant, the radio hosts were forced to perform cold calls and offer the prize to the first individual who picked up the phone.
“I’m sorry; I don’t want to drive to Kanata,” said one surprised woman who turned the tickets down. “But I think my son might…no, sorry he’s a Leafs fan.”
Efforts at donating the tickets to a charitable cause also failed.
“While I appreciate the thought, I think my organization can do better than that for terminally ill children,” said the President of a children’s hospital after being called unexpectedly by the show. “The kids don’t want to feel alone in all of those empty seats.”
At press time, Ottawa Senators fans were still outraged at the owner’s comments about the possibly moving a team they never watch.
