YELLOWKNIFE (Formerly known as WHITEHORSE) – To simplify things for Canadians living in large southern urban centers with no sense of northern geography, the City of Whitehorse will be changing its official moniker to ‘Yellowknife.’
“Research indicates that many people from down south keep calling our beloved city ‘Yellowknife’ instead of our actual name,’” explained Mayor Dan Curtis of Yellowknife, Yukon not to be confused with Yellowknife, NWT. “Both cities have names that involve colours followed by nouns and both are north of the 60th parallel. It’s easy to get the two confused.”
A poll suggested that a majority of Canadians incorrectly call Yukon’s capital either ‘Yellowknife’, ‘Whiteknife’ or ‘Yellowpeg’.
Ross Peterson of Toronto was pleased to hear that he is finally correct about the move his cousin made four years ago. “This is great news. It’s going to make it so much easier for me to explain to people where my cousin, Lucy, moved to for her nursing contract. Calling that town ‘Yellowknife’ is a real time-saver!”
According to sources, every city north of Edmonton will now be referred to as Yellowknife.
