MONTREAL — Recently elected Montreal mayor Valerie Plante’s approval rating has plummeted once again after announcing a controversial ban against driving your car into, and running over, cyclists on Mount Royal.
The Mayor faced backlash earlier this week after announcing that drivers could no longer use the mountain as a short cut to vehicular homicide. Many residents feel that the Mayor has infringed upon their freedom to recklessly run down cyclists on any viable street in the city.
“Picking off cyclists on your way to work is one of the conveniences of a metropolitan city. Our new hippie Mayor wants to deprive us of that?” said resident John Ferrier, who takes a route over the mountain to work, despite living next to a metro station.
Former Mayor Jean Drapeau first conceived of the road over the mountain as a means for drivers to cull the mountain’s rampant raccoon population. However, the road soon evolved into a shortcut for commuters and a magnet for incompetent drivers.
If the ban remains, Ferrier says he plans to move to Toronto, where “his right to mow down cyclists will be respected.”
