Swarm of midges covers shift for absent patio server

KINGSTON – A throng of midges hovering over a bar’s patio were pressed into service last night serving thirsty customers after a waitress missed her shift.

The Leviathan of small insects had been shifting casually back and forth through tables and the faces of patrons, before McFiddick’s Bar manager Tony Elison drafted its help.

“I said if they’re going to continue bothering everyone, they should at least cover Charlotte’s shift,” said Elison. “We had 10 tables to cover, so I told them to get on it.”

Customers at McFiddick’s were lukewarm on the performance of the 700 chironomids timeliness to deliver drinks.

“The was pretty good minus all of the drowned bugs I had to fish out of the pint,” said Henri Vachon swatting off some of the remnants of the server. “And I really don’t think it was appropriate of them to screw each other on our table like that.”

As the evening progressed, the swarm had earned some $60 in tips before dying off and being swept away at last call.
