CALGARY – City officials have announced that they will move to rename the municipal office that handles employment insurance and welfare claims after soon to be former Prime Minister Stephen Harper.
“It is a tradition in this country that we name prominent buildings after our most beloved leaders,” said mayor Nenshi. “I know some people wanted the airport, but frankly this felt a lot more appropriate for Mr. Harper.”
“We may even put a statue out front of him turning his back on clear evidence that Canada was in a recession,” he added.
The soon to be named Stephen J. Harper building also includes the provincial disability office, vehicle licensing centre, and three empty floors that previously held the statisticians responsible for the long form census. Mr. Harper appeared pleased with the choice.
“It is an honour to have my name permanently engraved onto a building in my beloved Calgary. My only regret is the building isn’t as grey and brutalist in nature as it could be.”
Calgary wasn’t the only municipality lining up to honour Canada’s 22nd Prime Minister. The city of Ottawa recently announced that the room where it keeps the files of veterans who have been denied pensions is to be renamed the Stephen Harper Memorial Wing.
