Napanee, ON —Despite a concerted attempt to summon helpful memories, and numerous prompting questions from family and friends, local mom Diane Peters is unable to recall the title, artist or era of song that she considers her favourite of all time.
“I know it’s something about a lady in a car. Or on a mountain, maybe,” said Peters, who remembers the name of every elementary and high school teacher her children have ever had. “It’s got some drums, but not too much. It’s really nice.”
The investigation into the song began shortly before Peters’ 57th birthday party, in which her children, Kara, 23, and John, 27, wanted to include her favourite song.
Peters’ children have tentatively concluded that the song, which Peters says reminds her of a time “back when I had that apartment on Dundas all to myself” was most likely released before 1993. “But it’s hard to say,” Kara stated as she scrolled through google results for singles from 1981-1987 containing the word “love.”
Peters has also provided some other cryptic clues about the song she “just can’t darned remember” that best expresses her sense of self and is most evocative of her fondest recollections. These included that she believes she heard it once when she was walking with “the fellow I went out with before I went out with your father” and “I think we got ice cream”.
“And it’s about being inside,” she added. “Or maybe about being outside.”
The search led to numerous attempts to jog Peters’ memory, including the playing of “Raspberry Beret,” “Rocky Mountain High” and even, in what the participants considered a long-shot attempt, “Anarchy in the U.K.” by the Sex Pistols.
The group remains hopeful that they will be able to identify the song, as Peters did remember, “I think there was something about a sea. Or maybe just water.”
“Wherever he–or she–was, it sounded really nice,” she added.
