MONTREAL – Police and paramedics were called to Montreal City Hall where Mayor Denis Coderre was mauled by a group of pit bull owners protesting the breed’s ban within the city.
“I heard lots of screaming and hollering from these owners,” explained Janice LaSalle who saw five off-leash pit bull owners approach Coderre as he left Hôtel de Ville de Montréal. “The mayor tried to run away, but they just kept barking at him ‘all breeds are equal!’, ‘my pit bull is gentle!’ and ‘end pit bull discrimination!’”
According to police, the aggressive breed of protester locked onto Coderre and refused to let him go before bystanders intervened.
“They shook and dragged him onto the street before I intervened with a stick,” added LaSalle.
Many of those who oppose the pit bull ban said that the owners were provoked by the Mayor.
“Well, it’s not the pit bull owner’s fault; Coderre egged them on with that ban and they thought he was a threat,” explained a man who did not witness the event. “And how did people know these pit bull owners actually owned a pit bull? Those dogs they had weren’t pit bulls; they were a muscular breed of the chihuahua.”
