CINCINNATI, OH – In a telephone conversation with his agent shortly after winning the National League MVP, Cincinnati Reds first baseman Joey Votto repeatedly asked if he was now going to earn $10 million.
“Look, I hit the ball and ran the bases and did everything else I was supposed to do,” Votto told his agent in a phone interview. “I just want to know when I’ll be earning the $10 million? Is it now?”
After discussing the pros and cons of securing an offer too soon, Votto ended the conversation and waited approximately 20 minutes before calling back his agent.
“What about now?” he asked.
