OTTAWA – As King Charles read the Speech From The Throne Conservative Party of Canada leader and not MP Pierre Poilievre was seen outside the Senate with his face pressed against the window.
The unemployed Conservative Party leader began the royal visit following the throngs of well wishers along Wellington Street where the King and Queen traveled in their ceremonial horse-drawn carriage. Poilievre followed the procession as he ran behind the crowd, occasionally jumping up so he could be seen, calling the King’s name.
“Charles!” witnesses say he called out. “It’s me! The leader of Your Majesty’s Loyal Opposition! Can you tell the prime minister to let me in to hear your speech? He knows me!”
After failing to trick Parliament Security by showing them Andrew Scheer’s ID, Poilievre ran up to the Senate main window where he pressed his hands and head against the glass, hoping for a good view and for someone to notice him.
As the King read the speech, Poilievre pounded the glass, shouting in vain to be heard. While the speech went on uninterrupted, Queen Camilla was overheard asking, “Did I hear someone say ‘bring it home’? What on Earth does that mean?”
“Did he say anything about getting rid of the Carbon Tax?! That was my idea!” Poilievre shouted down the corridor to anyone who was listening. But no one was.
After the speech Poilievre announced that Charles would be welcome to return and gave the Throne Speech again when he is PM, to which the King’s private secretary immediately announced the King was busy that week.
