– Many of the New Year’s Eve celebrations have been cancelled after event organizers failed to consider the possibility of .

Despite the considerable cost and hours spent in carefully devising the events, the plans did not account for conditions that fell into seasonal cold snaps.

“We are the capital of a nation that prides itself on cold weather,” explained Heritage event organizer Alasdair Tremblay, “and that’s why we are promptly cancelling events due to the cold weather.”

Most activities for ringing in 2018 in Canada’s capital have been cancelled, including the Canada 150 outdoor tropical fish display, the Canada 150 Slip ‘N Slide, and the Canada 150 Wet T-Shirt Competition.

“Whether be terrorism, thunderstorms, or swarms of angry carpenter ants, we were prepared,” Heritage Minister Mélanie Joly whose department is responsible for Canada 150 Celebrations. “But how could we have anticipated that New Year’s Eve fell on December 31st?”
