OTTAWA – In an effort to make motorists more aware of new segregated bike lanes, the City of Ottawa has installed large warning signs in the middle of bike lanes at each intersection and at random.
“Drivers need to get used to cyclists coming in both directions, so we’ve strategically placed the signs to take up most of the lane,” explained a spokesperson.
A recent spate of collisions between cars and cyclists has spurred on the additional safety measure, which will also act as a barrier preventing any vehicles from using the lanes.
According to sources, Ottawa’s urban planners are making plans to install spike strips and an automatic rising boom barrier so that motorists are protected from oncoming bikes.
