TORONTO – A Globe and Mail investigation into an MP’s actual birthplace has revealed that Science Minister Kirsty Duncan was, in fact, born in neighbouring Mississauga rather than the City of Toronto outraging many of the Globe’s columnists.
For years, the Toronto MP has insisted that she was from Toronto giving her a clear electoral advantage by claiming she happened to be born within arbitrary municipal boundaries. However, after exhaustive interviews with family and friends, and checking hospital records, Duncan’s actual birthplace was at Mississauga General Hospital in 1966. According to sources, she stayed in hospital for a full two weeks before her family relocated to what is now considered Toronto.
The Globe and Mail was quick to condemn another cabinet for being loose about her birthplace and using the Toronto-born narrative to her advantage.
“She should have come clean about her Mississauga roots,” scorned the Globe’s editorial. “While it doesn’t really matter where you are born in this country or in the world, it somehow matters now. We expect our newborns to know precisely where the municipal borders lie.”
Duncan said that her mother always told her she was from Toronto, but many weren’t buying her story.
“I don’t think I can trust anyone who claims they’re from Toronto, but was born in a location 15 minutes away from my home,” said Toronto resident Ahmed Boulous. “How was she vetted for cabinet? What language do people speak there?”
