SASKATOON – Debra McIntosh, a local mother, is barely holding back tears of happiness after she remembered that her husband and children will be celebrating Mother’s Day in a week.
“Just think, in only seven days time I’m going to be surrounded by the people I love. Nicky is probably going to bring me some chocolates and a card,” said Debra, dabbing at her eyes with a napkin. “I can’t believe they will have remembered me.”
Debra, who sources say is intermittently blowing her nose and checking for an email from her children, is known for getting misty during the two or three times a year when her family doesn’t take her entirely for granted.
“Oh shit, Mother’s Day is next week?” said Nick McIntosh, 28, a child that Debra has raised and supported since the day he was born. “I’d better draw a flower on a piece of printer paper and sign it.”
Debra says that it doesn’t even matter what her family has planned for Mother’s Day. The possibility that they’ll be thinking of her, even if it’s just for a few minutes, is enough.
“I know it’s silly,” explained Debra, wiping tear-stains from her cheeks. “But this holiday is so small and they really didn’t have to do anything, whatever it is that they do.”
“Oh God. I’m just so happy!”
At press time, Debra’s was curled in a corner, heaving with convulsive, throat-rending sobs after she realized that she’ll probably receive a present on her birthday in November.
