TORONTO – Following a flurry of free agent signings, the Toronto Maple Leafs experienced another setback after the team mistakenly signed a deal with infielder Michael Diaz for the next seven years at $37 million.
“We were looking for a replacement center now that Bolland is with the Panthers,” explained Leafs GM David Nonis. “We thought Diaz had the right attitude and experience to give the third line a real shot in the arm. Unfortunately, we didn’t properly account for which sport he played.”
Diaz, who has a .143 batting average with the Milwaukee Brewers AAA affiliate Louisville Riverbats, believes he can contribute aggressive play, tenacity and heart to a sport he has never played in his life.
“On the bright side, he couldn’t possibly be worse than Clarkson,” said long time fan Dave Wilson.
At press time, Nonis was still banking on first round draft pick Milos Raonic turning into a top defenceman, given his incredibly powerful tennis serve like slapshot.
