CHARLOTTETOWN – Honouring PEI’s most cherished fictional character, the province has named its first abortion clinic after Anne of Green Gables.
Unbeknownst to many Canadians, the author of the popular literary series, Lucy Maud Montgomery was a staunch pro-choice supporter in the early 20th century. In fact, in an unpublished epilogue, Anne decides to have an abortion after an unplanned pregnancy with classmate Gilbert Blythe.
“As the result of an unwanted pregnancy, Anne of Green Gables grew up as an orphan in abject poverty” said Minister of Health and Wellness Doug Currie before cutting the ribbon on the new facility. “The opening of this clinic will ensure that there will be fewer “Annes” in PEI.”
According to sources, the gift shop of the historical Green Gables farm house now features historical artifacts of abortion such as coat hangers and knitting needles.
