With TIFF fast approaching, programmers for the world’s second largest film festival are around 80% sure opening gala will feature Atom Egoyan’s next masterpiece.
“I don’t think Sarah [Polley] or David [Cronenberg] have films ready for release this year, so I’d say it’s a safe bet the opening gala will be something or other by Egoyan,” said TIFF programmer Cameron Bailey. “We are really excited to have this groundbreaking, poignant exploration of the human condition, whatever it’s called.”
The hypothetical film has been hailed by Canadian critics as a “possible triumph” with “heart-wrenching performances, in all likelihood”. The film is finally seeing its North American release after what TIFF programmers assume was a successful premiere at the Cannes Film Festival last spring.
Egoyan’s long-term producer Robert Lantos told reporters, “I haven’t gotten around to seeing the movie yet, but it likely includes lots of tragic deaths, a haunting score by Mychael Danna and full-frontal female nudity.”
Egoyan was pleased to hear that odds were his most recent film had been chosen for the prestigious TIFF opening night gala. He stated, “whatever it is I’ve been working on for the past 15 months, it’s probably going to be pretty fucking memorable.”
