MONTREAL – Ivan Doroschuk, lead singer for Canadian New Wavers Men Without Hats, announced that he will be re-forming the band for a 2011 tour, with one notable addition – this time with hats.
“I felt it was time to tour again but we wanted to do something really different. So I got together some new musicians and a trunk load of hats, everything ranging from fedoras to top hats, and we’re ready to hit the road. I think the hats will really add to our stage presence.”
Some fans reacted poorly to the announcement, and criticised the band for “selling out.”
“It used to be about the music. Now it’s just about hats,” said a long-time fan Tom Grimes.
Doroschuk makes no allusions about this risky move and the potential of alienating their fan base. “We’re artists,” Doroschuk said while adjusting his beret. “The industry has changed and we need to stand out. We just played Singapore last week and the crowd went crazy when we performed ‘Safety Dance’ while wearing hard hats. I’m sure that our fans will warm up in time.”
