EDMONTON — In preparation for their upcoming face-off against Canada’s Inuit community, the Edmonton Eskimos are planning to borrow some public winning over maneuvers from the Washington Redskins.
Wendy Handoff,Edmonton’s defensive image consultant, released a press statement on Thursday.
“Throughout the team’s history, the Redskins have gone up against teams with a much more public sympathy,” Handoff said, following her team’s pitch meeting huddle. “We’re going to have adjust them a bit for Canadian rules, but I think after a few focus groups and watching a few more ads, we’ll be ready”.
Max Polls, a spokesperson for the Redskins, says he was more than happy to lend the Eskimos their playbook.
“Even though we’re divided by land and team, I believe all football teams named after historically disadvantaged groups have a duty to support each other,” Polls said in a recent interview. “We have to show indigenous people that if they want us to stop culturally appropriating their name, they’re going to have to get past our strong defence of traditional fans and millions of dollars.”
Plays that the PR team is considering including blitzing the press, running out the clock to put pressure on the activists, and a Hail Mary multimedia ad campaign. The Eskimos will need all the advantages they can get, after having benched one of their PR consultants following allegations of shaving slogans in the last Grey Cup.
