VICTORIA, B.C. – Local man Stephen Dewitt is reportedly furious over the closing of independent bookstore ‘Moby Dickens’ despite having never financially supported the business in any form.
“Oh man, Moby is closing? That sucks. They had the best… books and stuff,” said Dewitt to his group of friends at Starbucks.
“This is just another example of how there is no room for quality, artisanal businesses anymore. Now its all about big money and high commerce,” added the lawyer whose last book purchase was in 2006, when he bought a guide to online stock market investing.
Dewitt reportedly felt particularly strongly about the loss as it came on the heels of his local pizza place being run out of business by the Pizza Hut franchise he regularly eats at, and the shuttering of “that cool place on Princess” that he reported thinking was a coffee shop or an art gallery or a jean store or something.
Dewitt’s friends were also quick to share their fond memories of the cherished local store.
“I remember going in there and wandering through the stacks. You could smell the leather and the ink. There were so many good books, I wanted to read them all. Plus the owner was so nice and cool with the fact that you left without buying anything,” said Lindsay Doubleday.
At press time, Dewitt was totally going to try and make it to Moby Dickens’ going out of business sale.
