TORONTO – At a press conference repudiating the NDP’s core principles on Tuesday, Andrea Horwath assured Ontarians that she is not a Progressive Conservative unless that’s what the voters want from her.
“I still stand for the deeply rooted principles of the New Democratic Party,” the Ontario NDP leader said attempting to clarify her party’s election platform. “We have always stood by Ontario’s working families, students and the elderly and will continue to do so…
“Unless that means we will not be elected government, in which case I support smaller government, balanced budgets and job cuts to government services. This is why I voted down one of the most progressive budgets in Ontario’s history to force an election.”
Not all members of Horwath’s party were convinced by this statement.
“Electability is not an NDP principle,” said an anonymous NDP staff member. “What is she doing?”
When informed of these comments, Horwath was unmoved.
“At the end of the day, I’m giving voters a clear choice between Tim Hudak and whoever is leading the Green Party” Horwath added.
