TORONTO – Due to the $130 million cuts to Canada’s national public broadcaster this year, CBC’s Radio 2 has been forced to reduce its broadcast to playing the call of a loon on repeat during all hours of its regular programming.
The call of the loon was selected because it meets CRTC’s Canadian content requirements.
The entire programming team of CBC Radio 2 will be cut with the exception of one man who identified himself only as “Doug.” He will be the sole operator of CBC Radio 2 and responsible for placing the tape of the loon in the tape player, monitoring the uninterrupted broadcast of the tape from 6:00AM to 2:00AM, and then removing the tape at the end of the broadcast.
Despite his 20-hour work day, Doug is considered a casual worker and will not be entitled to union benefits.
