TORONTO – Citing a pressing need to use resources and manpower on mishandling other sexual assault cases, the Crown has elected not to proceed with the second scheduled trial of former CBC broadcaster Jian Ghomeshi.
“Unfortunately our office is simply pulled in too many directions to continue with this prosecution,” said Crown prosecutor Michael Callaghan. “We need to be out there losing rape kits and not interviewing witnesses.”
“It’s also very important that we focus our energy on subtly convincing victims not to come forward,” he added.
Sources inside the Crown Attorney office insist that the decision had nothing to do with fear over losing a second trial against Ghomeshi defence counsel Marie Henein, and everything to do with a desire to create the kind of weaknesses and errors in future cases that allow lawyers like Henein to succeed.
“I am pleased with the Crown’s decision, and consider this vindication for my client, Mr. Ghomeshi,” said Henein at a press conference. “Hold on, I just got an email from the crown on another case suggesting I check out the victim’s facebook page.”
Ghomeshi himself did not speak to reporters. However on his Facebook page he wrote that he had “big plans” for all the free time he would have now.
