WHITEHORSE — In a race that has attracted international media coverage with stakes higher than ever before, Whitehorsians will determine the fate of their mayor, councillors and ultimately humankind.
The race, which has been covered hourly by CNN, BBC and China Radio International, pits three mayoral and twenty-two councillor candidates against one another.
The campaign has not been without controversy as several candidates reportedly lost a few lawn signs to what could have been vindictive opponents or the wind.
The United Nations called for calm and for Whitehorse voters to form orderly, single file lines when they vote at one of the 12 polling stations across the city today.
“I have not seen this much electoral uncertainty since the Antigonish School Board Trustee election of 2007,” explained CNN’s Don Lemon. “There’s still questions about the proposed sports facility Whistle Bend, zoning by-laws and recycling pick-up. We’ll be here all night if we have to.”
