OTTAWA — Fresh from a court hearing in which he pled guilty to assault and possession of cocaine, Senator Patrick Brazeau was uncertain about whether it would be a smart move for his reputation to return to his place in the Senate.
“This has been a nightmare scenario,” Brazeau said, fielding questions outside the Ottawa courthouse. “I’ve had my good name dragged through the mud. And after all this, going back to being a full-time member of the Canadian Senate? Do I really want to be associated with that? Is that the first thing I want people to see when they google my name? That I’m a Senator?
Brazeau currently works as a day manager at BareFax, an Ottawa strip club, and was quick to draw a comparison between the club and Canada’s upper chamber. “Look, where I’m at now, I have real responsibility, I’m working a full forty-hour week, and what I do has a real positive impact on the lives of Canadians. Could I say the same before?”
When asked about what might convince him to return to the Senate, Brazeau offered some conditions. “It’s a hard sell. I’ve been getting a lot of offers to do more celebrity boxing matches, or maybe to get more into professional wrestling. Those just seem like safer bets, just a little more serious.”
“I have to look out for number one. That means: what can I do to convince Canadians that I’m not the corrupt clown that they think I am? With that in mind, I’m not sure the Senate is the right move.”
