OTTAWA – NDP Leader Thomas Mulcair is touting his party’s experience as sound fiscal managers by promoting the fact that his party has never run a federal deficit.
“The New Democratic Party has never, ever posted a deficit in the history of the federal budget,” Mulcair thundered at a press conference in Parliament’s Center Block. “Even during the Great Depression, World War II, the OPEC oil crisis or the more recent Great Recession, the New Democrats have never placed Canada in such a dire financial situation.”
Mulcair pointed to a graph to illustrate his party’s record since 1963.
“A federal NDP government has also never raised taxes, cut spending to programs, declared war or made anyone feel sad,” Mulcair boasted. “That’s real experience and real leadership.”
Prime Ministers Tommy Douglas and Alexa McDonough always had a balanced budget of zero and there was no inflation whatsoever during their tenure.
“Can the Liberals or Conservatives say that? I think not.”
At press time, the Green Party, Marxist-Leninist Party and the Libertarian Party were also making similar claims.
