SOCHI, Russia — Amid complaints from international media that much of the Sochi olympic facilities are still under construction and the hotel accommodations essentially unlivable, Russian President Vladimir Putin has made a bold promise that every single amenity will be 100% completed before the opening ceremonies next time the International Olympic Committee gives Sochi the winter Olympic games.
“When we have the games here again, after the 2014 trial run, you will be able to see the full glory of the Russian Olympic spirit,” said Putin at a press conference.
The Sochi games have already cost an estimated 50 billion dollars, which Putin said would have been foolish if they didn’t host the games at least twice.
As for the timing of the second Sochi games, the Russian President said that he knows the next games are scheduled for 2018 in Pyeongchang, South Korea, but saw no reason why his games couldn’t take place in 2015, 2016, or both.
When asked how he came to believe that the IOC would grant Sochi a second winter Olympics, Putin only said that he would use the same “techniques” as last time, but did not go into detail.
“We know that in time, the world will see the Sochi Olympic games, and its upcoming sequel, as the best two in Olympic history,” added Putin.
At press time, Putin further promised that, by the next Sochi games, there would be no homophobia in Russia, mainly due to “an absence of homosexuals.”
