OTTAWA – Statistics Canada today released the results of a damning online survey concerning Canadians’ comprehension of basic statistics. Out of 33 million Canadians, nearly 41 million Canadians were deemed to be statistically illiterate.
“It’s unfortunate that the country’s statistical ignorance resulted in the population growing by 8 million” said Wayne Smith, Chief Statistician of Canada. “Where the hell did these people come from?”
The international online survey received support from several universities and academics like Dr. Naomi Lin at the Department of Statistics, University of Toronto. “We had to tweak the methodology in the middle of the survey since Canadian athletes completing the survey were consistently giving 110 percent” Lin explained as she pointed to some complicated-looking graphs.
