NEW YORK – In a rare moment of near unanimity, the member states of the United Nations General Assembly came together yesterday afternoon passing a motion affirming the fundamental belief that Spanish and Portuguese sound pretty much identical to them.
“It was time to stop debating and finally take action on this issue,” said American ambassador to the UN Susan Rice, before adding with a smile “We need to say Buenos Dias to the notion that the two languages are the same.”
The vote passed 165 to 27; with Saudi Arabia abstaining after its attempt to amend the motion to also condemn Israel was rejected. The only opposition came from the world’s Spanish and Portuguese speaking countries. After the motion passed the ambassadors of Spain and Brazil held a joint press conference condemning the UN’s action, in which they made an elaborate show of pretending not to understand exactly what the other one was saying.
