NEW YORK – Following the massive success of Chernobyl, the miniseries about the world’s worst nuclear disaster, HBO has announced a follow-up special airing this December which will bring a Chernobyl approach to the beloved winter holiday.
The show’s writer and creator, Craig Mazin, revealed that most of the fan-favourite characters in the Emmy-winning critical darling will be returning for ‘A Very Chernobyl Christmas’. “I can’t say too much, but I can tell you that the young man whose job it is to kill house pets will encounter a very special reindeer with a glowing nose that releases 20,000 roentgens of radiation.”
HBO also divulged that the plot of the special will revolve around the character Legasov, played by Jared Harris, who hangs himself in the opening scene of the miniseries. “I don’t want to give too much away,” said Harris cheekily, “but Legasov will, along with everyone in the audience, learn a valuable lesson about what Christmas is really about, which is generosity and family. And the COST of LIES. No, sorry, that was the original miniseries. This one is very pro-lie, what with Santa Claus being such a big part of it.”
The Russian state television network NTV has already announced their own version of the special, where one of the elves who works in the nuclear facility is a CIA plant trying to undermine the Soviet Union and the true meaning of Christmas: loyalty to the state. The A Very Chernobyl Christmas will be airing December 18, as part of special week of holiday specials that includes A Very The Wire Hanukkah, A Very Game of Thrones Kwanzaa, and Frosty the Snowman Goes to Westworld.
