TORONTO – In an effort to take on some of the pomp and glitz of other international award ceremonies, the Canadian Screen Awards has unveiled a new cash bar, a move that organizers say is sure to get people’s attention.
“We wanted this evening to be one of opulence, extravagance, and style,” said Helga Stephenson, CEO of the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television as she extended her arm towards the bar in an unveiling gesture. “Something that says to the world, Canadian cinema is here and worth watching. That’s why we went for wood,” she added, tapping her knuckles against the bar for emphasis.
Stephenson explained that with just a simple display of $6.50, guests at the ceremony would enjoy such exotic libations as Canadian Club Whisky, Captain Morgan’s Spiced Rum, Beefeater Gin, and Smirnoff Vodka, in addition to a variety of exquisite additives from all over the world known to connoisseurs as ‘mixers’.
“And look at this,” she said, pulling out a bottle. “Real Canada Dry Ginger Ale.”
“It’s jaw-dropping,” said Eugene Levy, star of Schitt’s Creek. “Now if my flask runs dry, I don’t have to panic. That’s when you know you’ve made it.”
In addition to the cash bar, guests appreciated the CSA’s use of retro plastic cups with a ‘2010 Geminis’ logo.
