WHITEHORSE — An actual news story about Yukon Conservative MP Ryan Leef catching and arresting a woman vandalizing his election sign in a sting operation has bewildered many in the satirical news business.
“This can’t possibly be true!” exclaimed James Bunting, a writer at a local satirical newspaper. “This MP set up a sting operation involving motion detectors, cameras and waited in the bushes for the vandal to arrive. He yelled ‘citizens arrest!’ and physically apprehended the suspect. That must be lies!”
“There’s gotta be something here,” said fellow writer Alfie Green. “How did this vandal not know it was illegal to cut up election signs? Why was she cutting out just the name? What the hell?”
The writing room remained silent as the team of humourists desperately searched for a fabricated idea that had not been already reported as factual.
“Wait, I’ve got it!” an excited Bunting proclaimed about to pitch his idea. “Leef arrests vandal with handcuffs, wearing camouflage.”
–“Nope, that actually happened,” corrected the editor shaking her head.
The team even went as far as to contact Leef’s office where the MP reluctantly admitted the story’s legitimacy.
With the inability to compete with non-fake news organizations, the online satirical publication immediately shut down leaving five writers employed.
