IQALUIT — As of earlier today, local officials were hoping that the city’s massive dump fire, which has been raging for more than six weeks now, will act as a distress signal alerting the federal government to the city’s massive dump fire.
“We hope the dump fire sends an urgent message to politicians in Ottawa,” said Chief Administrative Officer John Naaqtuuq about the fire colloquially known as “dumpcano.” “Namely: ‘For the love of god help us put out this dump fire!’”
Premier Peter Taptuna has also said that the fire is a good way to alert the Canadian public about the blatant lack of firefighting resources in the North.
“If we do not receive support on this, this will soon become a tourist attraction,” the Premier cautioned.
At press time, the federal government had received the city’s plea for help and recommended they “ride this one out” for another 2-3 weeks.
