KINGSTON – A student has informed campus colleagues that he is a member of their university by wearing a jacket with his institution’s name emblazoned on the back.
“I just wanted to reassure everyone in my classes that I do indeed go to this establishment and not any other university, college or high school,” said Blake Smyth, a second year development studies student at Queen’s. “This is why I invested $500 in this leather jacket.”
Smyth’s efforts seemed to pay off when he strutted his new fashion around the bookstore, the Grant Hall and along University Avenue catching public attention.
“Hey, I think that guy goes to Queen’s too!” exclaimed fellow student Marie-Lynne Schoobert after seeing Smyth. “That’s really great to see another Queen’s student on Queen’s campus because I go to Queen’s as suggested by the letters on my sweatpants.”
Despite many students reaffirming their university identity with fashion, there are some that do not regularly don any clothing with the prestigious institution’s name on it. There have also been reports of individuals wearing clothing that identifies with universities other than Queen’s.
“I once saw a man on campus wearing a Harvard t-shirt” Smyth explained while shaking his head in disgust. “Was it some type of sick joke? Is he being ironic because Queen’s is known as the ‘Harvard of the North’? Or does he actually study at Harvard?”
Smyth will keep wearing his jacket everywhere he goes to make it clear that he isn’t a 60-year old local Kingstonian.
