HALIFAX – Elections Nova Scotia has announced that its services will be offered in two Nova Scotian dialects on election day; english and Cape Bretoner.
“We’re quite pleased to see that Capers are accommodated for in the democratic participation” said Richard P. Temporale, Chief Electoral Officer of Nova Scotia. “This sophisticated language not only is the chief dialect on Cape Breton Island, but can also be heard throughout Halifax when Capers are spending their vacation here.”
Cape Breton language services have already been offered throughout the province by interpreters like Sharon McTavish, Elections Nova Scotia worker and native of Sydney.
“How are yah?” asked McTavish asking an eligible voter over the phone at polling station. “Good, dear, good. Can I ask for yer father’s name? Uh huh, and where yer’at? Terrace Street Dairy, eh? G’way wit ya? My father’s family from down d’ere!”
The conversation between McTavish and the eligible voter lasted for over an hour and covered broad topics such as the recent weather and how the two are related.
